MY LAST WORD ON CANADA STARTS AT THE VERY BEGINNING...

The people who have existed in Canada from the very beginning created some amazing artwork and traditions for us to learn about now...

Disctintive paintings and beautiful wood carvings caught my attention but the one custom that fascinated me was the Inukshuk...  Murray came across one on the beach rocks near our villa in Tofino...

They are monuments made of unworked stones that are used by the Inuit people for communication and survival. The traditional meaning of the Inukshuk is "Someone was here" or "You are on the right path."

These sculptural forms are among the oldest and most important objects placed by humans upon the vast Arctic landscape and have become a familiar, friendly symbol of the Inuit and of their homeland.

An Inukshuk is a welcome sight to a traveller on a featureless and forbidding landscape.

Tofino's rugged coastline often felt a little wild and daunting... it's no wonder someone built an Inukshuk there!
